Diving watches: when time goes underwater

July carries the scent of the sea. It's the month when the watch on your wrist can turn into a companion for adventure, ready to dive and go under with you.

Diving watches are among the most fascinating categories in all of watchmaking: a story built on challenges, precision, and that touch of courage it takes to explore the unknown.

Where it all began

The diving watch was born from a real need: giving divers a reliable instrument to measure the time spent underwater. In the 1950s, as professional diving began to spread, the watch became a genuine safety tool.
Not an aesthetic flourish, but an ally able to mark the exact minutes of oxygen left.

From those early insights grew a tradition that still shapes the style of many iconic timepieces today.
Because the appeal of a diver lies precisely here: combining a sporty soul with a ruggedness built to withstand pressure, impact, and salt water.

The technology that makes the difference

But what really makes a watch a diver?

There are a few technical details worth knowing to appreciate every last feature.

The first is water resistance: divers offer sealed tightness starting at 100 metres and reaching well beyond in professional models.
What makes this possible is the screw-down crown and the optimised case back, which seal the movement away from the water.

Then comes the true star of the show: the unidirectional rotating bezel, which lets the diver calculate immersion times with precision. Its one-way rotation is no accident: if knocked by mistake, the bezel can only reduce the calculated time, never extend it. A design choice that is, above all, a safety choice.

Finally, legibility: high-contrast dials and luminescent markers, so you can read the time even in the darkness of the depths. Every element, in short, has a precise function. Nothing is left to chance.

The divers available at Florio Folini

At our boutiques in Sondrio and Livigno you'll find a selection of diving watches designed for every wrist and every style.

It's impossible not to begin with Rolex, which wrote the history of this category.
The Submariner, introduced in 1953, was the first wristwatch waterproof to 100 metres: an absolute archetype, so dependable that it soon broke free from the water and won over dry land too. Every detail is designed around the real needs of divers.

For those drawn to the most extreme depths, the Deepsea range pushes Rolex's research even further down, with case architectures capable of resisting unimaginable pressure. These are timepieces that tell the story of a decades-long bond between the brand and the exploration of the deep.

Alongside it, Tudor brings all its boldness. The star of the summer is the Black Bay 54 "Lagoon Blue": a beautifully proportioned 37 mm case and a dial in a deep, brilliant blue that feels made for the season. Every detail echoes the water, from the polished bezel to the five-link bracelet with its "T-fit" clasp that adjusts to the wrist.
A diver with a sporty soul and refined elegance, at home just as much on a swim as at dinner with a view of the sunset.

And if you love colour and a contemporary spirit, the Polycarbon Diver by D1 Milano brings a fresh, lightweight timepiece with a bold design to your wrist: the ideal choice for living the summer with character, without giving up on practicality.
